TenneT

TenneT

As the grid operator for the Netherlands and a large part of Germany, we own and manage 25,000 kilometers of high-voltage cables. Our main task: ensuring that the lights stay on and that electricity is always available at the press of a button. With our supply reliability of 99.99963%, we are one of the best grid operators in the world.

Maintaining Balance
Using innovative control systems, we keep the grid in balance. This is crucial because if the demand for electricity exceeds the supply, a power outage can occur. To maintain that balance and prevent disruptions, strong connections between electricity networks within and outside the country are necessary. We play a prominent role in this. As the first true cross-border grid operator, TenneT is one of Europe's largest investors in national and cross-border transmission capacity, both on land and at sea. Additionally, we contribute to the development of new market solutions to ensure that the cross-border supply of electricity is also economically efficient. In this way, TenneT unites the Northwest European energy markets and promotes the energy transition in Europe.

A New Future with Clean Energy
We are convinced that an integrated European system for electricity transmission is necessary for a stable and reliable energy market, especially as the share of renewable energy in the energy mix is rapidly growing and we are moving towards a new future with clean energy.

Renewable energy sources are the key to the energy transition. However, they present TenneT and other grid operators with significant challenges. Electricity from wind or solar cannot simply be turned on or off, and storing electricity is not straightforward. The unpredictability of sustainable energy sources therefore requires innovative solutions. There is a need for cross-border connections to keep the grid balanced and to enable the buying and selling of electricity in the market.
